NAIDOC ROUND 2023

"In 2023, we were honoured to work with Aboriginal artists Carl Garlett and Nola Naylor, who designed a unique Indigenous Club jumper for NAIDOC Round, celebrating the rich history and culture of the South Coogee region. Their generosity in donating the original artworks, which beautifully capture themes of connection, resilience, and community, ensures these stories will inspire our club for generations to come.”

Celebrating Culture and Connection through Indigenous Art

In 2023, the South Coogee Junior Football Club proudly collaborated with Aboriginal artists Carl Garlett and Nola Naylor, grandparents to one of our Year 11 players, to create a special Indigenous Club jumper for NAIDOC Round. This stunning jumper tells the story of the South Coogee region, connecting the club to the rich history and culture of the Noongar people.

In addition to designing the jumper, Carl and Nola generously donated the original artworks, which will be prominently displayed in our clubrooms as a lasting tribute to their artistry and the stories they embody.

The artworks feature lizards, symbolising the competitive spirit to survive, thrive, and do one's best for the collective. Surrounding elements depict the connection between the past and present, carrying these stories forward into the future.

One painting tells the story of South Coogee (body of water), located between the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River), Walyalup (Fremantle), and Coogee—an area once home to the Noongar people who lived and hunted there.

The second painting, in the club’s team colors, shares a new story through the message sticks. These symbols represent the diversity within the team, their journey, and the shared experiences that will inspire connection within the team, their families, and the wider community for generations to come.
